CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Marquisha S. Jackson, 22, was arrested yesterday in Gainesville for allegedly exploiting a disabled client by using her bank account for groceries and food deliveries — she admitted entering the account on her personal phone. Alachua Chronicle
- ➤ A Gainesville woman, 32, was sentenced on June 2 to eight years in prison for DUI manslaughter after her November 27, 2022 crash near Sweetwater Wetlands Park killed UF graduate student Zeshan Haider—she pleaded guilty, received three years probation and had her driver’s license permanently revoked. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ UF president pick Santa Ono was rejected by the Florida Board of Governors on June 3rd, and the decision means the board will look for another candidate to lead the university. The rejection came after the board reviewed his appointment. WCJB
- ➤ Florida Gov Ron DeSantis signed a law that changes the ways death penalties can be carried out—if lethal injection drugs are unavailable and a method is not ruled unconstitutional, other options like firing squad, hanging or nitrogen gas can be used. The law takes effect July 1 and provides new backup methods for executions. The Gainesville Sun
- ➤ Four K-9s from the Alachua County Sheriff's Office retired on May 30 after serving in patrol and drug detection — Ruger, Deacon, Kaos, and Jerry helped find missing people and seize illegal drugs and weapons, and their handlers will honor their service. The Gainesville Sun
- ➤ Today, the Florida Board of Governors met at UCF’s downtown campus in Orlando to vote on whether to confirm Santa J. Ono as UF’s 14th president—and if approved, Ono will begin his term today with a $1.5 million base salary under a contract lasting until May 2030. The Independent Florida Alligator

- ➤ Four-star Milton safety Kaiden Hall verbally committed to play for the Gators after an official visit this past weekend (he chose the Gators over offers from Florida State, Alabama and Georgia). He was injured last season but is expected to be fully recovered for his senior year. The Gainesville Sun
- ➤ The NCAA is close to finalizing a four-part NIL framework that would cap athlete payments at $20.5 million—this change may force UF to rely more on its recruiting staff and adjust its revenue sharing with athletes. UF Director of NIL Strategy Ben Chase said the new rules promise more corporate NIL deals, and a decision on the settlement is expected in the next few months. The Independent Florida Alligator
