- ➤ Alachua County Animal Resources at 3400 Northeast 53rd Avenue invites residents to meet adoptable pets Princess, Milo, and Chip Skylark — the shelter is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for visits. WCJB
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The musical Pump Boys and Dinettes (an upbeat show blending country tunes and interactive scenes) opened on Wednesday at The Hippodrome Theatre and launched the new season with live music that delighted Gainesville audiences. The show will run through June 20. The Independent Florida Alligator
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Seventeen students at Eastside High and Hawthorne Middle/High School have completed a CNA prep course (funded by a $60,000 HCA Healthcare Foundation grant) to prepare for the Florida nursing exam this spring (including training, study materials, and fees covered by the grant), as the Education Foundation and local CTE department work together to remove financial barriers for future healthcare professionals. - ➤ Five UF graduates shared advice with current and incoming students, urging them to balance school work with campus activities and prioritize real experiences over just high grades—planning schedules, joining clubs, and keeping close friendships were key points. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City officials on May 29th released a brochure called Prepare and Weather the Storm to help neighbors plan for an above-average hurricane season. Printed copies will be available at City Hall, Clarence R. Kelly Community Center, UF Health Urgent Care Center and Florida Department of Health in Alachua County while residents can also access the guide online in English and Spanish. Alachua Chronicle
- ➤ The Florida Board of Governors will vote Tuesday on confirming Santa J. Ono as UF’s 14th president after the Board of Trustees approved his nomination last Tuesday. If confirmed, he will begin a five-year contract on June 4 with a base salary of $1.5 million. The Independent Florida Alligator
- ➤ Joseph (Shawn) Hillhouse is selected as Gainesville’s new Fire Chief following a nationwide search and will assume the role on Monday, June 9. He has 22 years with Gainesville Fire Rescue and previously served as Interim Fire Chief after Joe Dixon’s departure. Alachua Chronicle
