COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gainesville will host free Gun Violence Awareness Month events in June, featuring a memorial at Squirrel Ridge Park on May 30 (10 a.m. to noon) and a proclamation at City Hall Auditorium on June 4 as community partners encourage healing and dialogue.  Alachua Chronicle

  • Heartwood Soundstage in Gainesville will host the With Everything Going On festival on May 30 (4 to 10 p.m.), featuring local and regional talent and launching local songwriter Jordan Burchel’s new album.  The Gainesville Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Florida will offer an Early Decision admissions option for students confident in UF as their first choice. Applicants can submit by Aug. 1 for a decision mid-December with final applications due Oct. 15 — a change made after feedback from local high schools and parents.  WCJB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A University of Florida study reviewed over 300 articles and found hurricanes can benefit wildlife by filling breeding pools + boosting food sources while also spreading invasive species as scientists prepare for the Atlantic hurricane season beginning June 1.  The Gainesville Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Gainesville Planned Parenthood health center will close next month, leaving patients concerned as the nearest facility is 80 miles away (forcing longer travel times for routine care).  WCJB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, 64 teams begin the NCAA baseball tournament and the Gainesville regional includes Florida, Miami, Troy and Rider, with Florida expected to face rival Miami (which swept a recent set) while Rider banks on senior ace PJ Craig to advance into the College World Series.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Florida football hired Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech as its new offensive coordinator under head coach Jon Sumrall (he will earn $2.1 million this season with options to boost his salary) and announced further salary details for staff ranging from $350,000 to $1.85 million.  GatorSports
  • Florida baseball will host the Gainesville Regional on Friday, May 29 with the Gators opening against Rider at 1 p.m. on ESPN+; season ticket holders can purchase tickets while public sales begin Thursday, May 28 at 10 a.m. with berm seats starting at $48.  The Gainesville Sun
