EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school senior Aniyah Faith Williams has earned nearly $1 million in scholarships, with about $100,000 from private sources and $800,000 from merit awards. She will attend Florida A&M University this fall to study Biology on a predental track — and she credits her mother for teaching the value of education.  WCJB
  • UF Health and Santa Fe College renewed their nurse training partnership on Wednesday at Santa Fe College’s Northwest Campus—this $700K funding, split between UF Health’s $350K grant and matching state funds, will help pay for student scholarships and a new academic space. The renewal marks the third year of a collaboration that has provided more than $1.8 million to support nursing education.  Alachua County Today
  • The University of Florida has seen enrollment grow since 2021, but transfer students have remained a small part of the student body, which affects their access to community clubs. Many transfers report challenges in finding support programs and UF has offered orientation and seminar programs—such as a transfer success seminar—to help ease their transition.  The Independent Florida Alligator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alachua County Fire Rescue Station 23 launched a new trailer designed for trench and collapse rescues to help firefighters work safely during building incidents. The trailer (rolled out six weeks ago) responded to one call and is the county’s second such unit, with similar setups in other counties.  WCJB

SPORTS NEWS

  • UF freshman Taylor Shumaker tied the state record with 22 homers and 86 RBIs and was named NFCA Freshman of the Year at a banquet in Oklahoma City on Tuesday, while outfielder Korbe Otis became the first Gator to win the Elite 90 award and was drafted sixth overall on May 3; she will begin her professional career on June 7 and plans to pursue medical school after softball.  WCJB
  • Ten-time All-American gymnast eMjae Frazier transferred from Cal to Florida Tuesday + she will compete for her senior season, aiming to fill a gap left by recent Gator graduates. She recorded three perfect 10.0s at Cal + her move marks a key addition to the team this season.  WRUF
  • The University of Florida announced plans to build the Flavet Outdoor Recreational Complex on Flavet Field to meet rising demand for on-campus sports. The $6 million project — set to include six pickleball courts, two sand volleyball courts, three table tennis courts and lawn space — is projected for completion early 2026.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Florida baseball freshman Aidan King has pitched well for UF by allowing just one run in his last two games against Texas and Alabama—he may pitch this weekend when UF plays in the regional tournament.  GatorSports
  • The Florida Gators will face SEC rival Texas in Game 1 of the Women’s College World Series today with game coverage beginning at 11:45 a.m. (broadcast on ESPN 98.1-FM/850-AM WRUF) after a three-game Super Regionals win over Georgia.  WRUF
