BUSINESS NEWS

  • Raising Cane’s opened its second Gainesville restaurant on Archer Road yesterday — drawing more than 100 visitors, including high school cheerleaders and University mascots, to a ribbon cutting celebration that featured a $1,000 donation to the Humane Society of North Florida.  The Gainesville Sun
  • The Paper Bag Deli will open its new Waldo storefront mid-June with a coffee drive-thru and specialty coffee line (The Paper Cup) that will serve breakfast and lunch items. The store will start at 6 a.m. and may extend hours based on local traffic.  Mainstreet Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Florida Historical Marker Council approved markers honoring 12 women to fill a gap in historical recognition. The markers, featuring figures such as Mary McLeod Bethune and Chris Evert, will be dedicated in local communities over the coming months.  The Gainesville Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A federal judge heard testimony on May 27 in a UF case challenging former law student Preston Damsky’s expulsion for antisemitic social media posts; trial continues today as Damsky seeks reinstatement while UF cites his posts as a breach of campus conduct (raising safety concerns).  The Gainesville Sun
  • University of Florida will host public forums with presidential finalist Dr. Stuart Bell on Wednesday, June 3. Sessions for faculty (1 to 2 p.m.), students (2:15 to 3:15 p.m.) and staff (3:30 to 4:30 p.m.) will be held at Emerson Alumni Hall on UF's main campus.  WCJB
  • TV20's Wildlife Wednesday reporter Vinny Mutone visited Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo this week to show habitat updates. The teaching zoo is unveiling improved animal exhibits for students + visitors to explore.  WCJB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alachua County lifted the burn ban on May 27 after several days of heavy rain reduced wildfire risk, and officials urge residents to burn safely while monitoring conditions closely; they may reinstate restrictions if weather worsens.  Alachua County Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • Planned Parenthood — Gainesville will close on June 26 after patients received a notification on Wednesday that they can obtain ongoing care and records until then; the center advises patients to seek services at alternative locations, with the nearest in Jacksonville.  WCJB

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developers plan Everlee Project, a 2,700-unit neighborhood with a 200-acre working farm off Parker Road. The project will span 900 acres on a 4,000-acre property — with construction set to begin in the next two to three years and community sessions scheduled through June.  WCJB

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 64-team NCAA Baseball Tournament begins Friday, May 29 at 16 regional sites – Gainesville hosts the Florida Regional where fans can buy single-day or weekend passes.  The Gainesville Sun
  • The Southeastern Conference has announced game times for the Gators’ first three football contests; Florida will play Florida Atlantic on Sept. 5 at 7:45 p.m. on SEC Network, host Campbell on Sept. 12 at 5:30 p.m. on SECN+ and face Auburn at 7 p.m. on ESPN.  WRUF
  • Florida football coach Jon Sumrall said on May 27 that he aims to boost UF's NIL investment to reach top SEC standards and stressed strict player discipline after offseason issues; he traveled statewide meeting donors as part of his effort to build team support.  GatorSports
