CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Gainesville man Jason Lee Saul, 40, pleaded nolo contendere to DUI manslaughter in the death of Andra Paul Driggers from a January 22 crash and was sentenced on May 13 to 7.5 years in prison—he will serve 7.5 years of probation after completing his sentence. Alachua Chronicle
- ➤ GPD released new images and a 12-second video of two persons of interest in the downtown shooting that occurred on May 18—detectives ask anyone with details to contact them immediately. Alachua Chronicle
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Heartwood Music Fest IX will take place on Saturday, June 14th at 619 S. Main Street—doors open at 3 p.m. and music starts at 4 p.m. The festival, celebrating nearly a decade of live music and community, is a collaborative production by The Listening Room and Heartwood Soundstage with a theme of 'All Together Now.' - ➤ On May 24, community members gathered at the Cotton Club Museum and Cultural Center for the Florida Emancipation Celebration—a key event in Gainesville’s monthlong Journey to Juneteenth. The event featured a 9 a.m. march from Depot Park, music, educational exhibits and personal storytelling to honor the emancipation of enslaved people in Florida. The Independent Florida Alligator

- ➤ Today the UF Board of Trustees voted unanimously to select Dr. Santa J. Ono as the university's next president pending ratification by the Florida Board of Governors (he previously led the University of Michigan). He was chosen from hundreds of candidates and said he is eager to work with UF students, faculty, and staff (his career highlights include work in public health and vision research). - ➤ The University of Florida Board of Trustees selected Dr. Santa Ono as the 14th president on May 27 (pending Florida Board of Governors approval) after a nearly three-hour interview, and he left his post at the University of Michigan to make the move. He fielded questions on topics such as diversity, equity and inclusion programs, antisemitism and climate change during the meeting. The Gainesville Sun

- ➤ The Gainesville Housing Authority will host an open house for its new ELITE Training Center from 4 to 6 p.m. May 29 at 2626 E. University Ave, where residents and community members can learn about job training & business development programs funded by a $500,000 HUD CHOICE Neighborhoods Planning Grant.
