BUSINESS NEWS

  • Raising Cane’s opens its second Gainesville outlet today (May 27) at 3433 SW Archer Road, replacing the former ABC Fine Wine and Spirits. The chain will add nine more locations across Florida soon.  The Gainesville Sun
  • The original Sonny's BBQ location reopened May 15 at 2700 NE Waldo Road after a month-long renovation that added a drive-thru and refreshed the indoor pickup area with new floors and tables — updates that preserve its long-standing legacy.  The Gainesville Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UF has maintained its temporary pause on out-of-state and international transfer admissions that began in February to better balance enrollments, and the pause has now lasted over two months. The Board of Trustees will consider a fee increase for nonresident students on June 11.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Santa Fe College has launched a hands-on Radiation Therapy Specialist Program to train graduates for cancer care in Gainesville. Registration is open until July 1 and classes will begin this Fall with instruction from UF Health + UF Shands.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Alachua County schools will finish the 2025-2026 school year on Tuesday, June 2 and open for the new school year on Monday, Aug. 10 + families in Gainesville should check with their district for details.  The Gainesville Sun
  • UF’s Innovation Academy makes Summer a key semester by offering an innovation minor through interactive design challenges and projects. The Catalyst program will have students solve real-world issues (such as improving veteran care) in small classes that nurture close connections.  The Independent Florida Alligator

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida Gators softball ended its season in the Super Regionals at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium when Texas Tech’s timely scoring after defensive errors + excessive walks led to a collapse, leaving the team to reflect on its heavy reliance on pitcher Keagan Rothrock despite a 21-0 start.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Florida's strong offense powered dominant wins over Vanderbilt and Alabama before a rain delay and late rally by Georgia ended its SEC Tournament run in the semifinals. The Gators will host regionals in Gainesville starting May 29 with Miami, Troy, and Rider competing as lower seeds.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Four of five starters will return for Florida basketball's 2026-27 season, promising a strong core despite guard Xaivian Lee's graduation, with center Rueben Chinyelu—who averaged 10.9 points and 11.2 rebounds last season—returning after an NBA combine.
