- ➤ A Memorial Day ceremony was held at Evergreen Cemetery in Gainesville on May 26 to honor service members who lost their lives in military service. City officials and local veteran services gathered—placing yard signs and presenting gifts—in a solemn tribute to the fallen. The Gainesville Sun
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ David Martin Jr., a 19-year-old man, was arrested on Sunday morning in a Newberry neighborhood for fatally shooting 44-year-old Harley Van Leer on Northwest Seventh Place—he admitted to the shooting before fleeing the scene and turning the gun over to another person. WCJB
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Florida basketball coach Todd Golden explained that his six-year contract extension includes an NBA buyout clause that lowers fees in steps if he moves to an NBA team—fees that are much lower than for a move to another college team. He said the clause gives him extra future options while he remains committed to the Gators after their national title win. GatorSports
- ➤ Florida baseball earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will start play on May 30 in the Conway Regional by facing 3 seed East Carolina. The Gators hope to reach the Super Regionals and secure a chance at their third straight College World Series appearance + they have rebounded after a slow start this season. GatorSports
- ➤ The University of Florida Gators Softball team headed to the Women’s College World Series after a win against Georgia in the super regionals—fans gathered Monday at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium to send them off and they will face the Texas Longhorns at noon on Thursday. WCJB
- ➤ The Florida Gators clinched their spot in the Women’s College World Series with a 5—2 win over Georgia at Katie Seashole Pressly Softball Stadium in Gainesville on May 26. They will face sixth-seeded Texas at noon on Thursday in a game aired on ESPN. WRUF
