CRIME NEWS
- ➤ William Walter Murphy, 37, was sentenced to life in prison on May 23 after a jury found him guilty of first degree murder, unlawful carrying of a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting an officer without violence and drug offenses—charges linked to a botched drug deal that led to Nathaniel Foye’s death. - ➤ The University of Florida’s Board of Trustees will vote on the selection of Santa J. Ono as the next president on May 27 at Emerson Hall at 10 a.m.—Dr. Ono currently serves as president of the University of Michigan and his selection follows Ben Sasse stepping down in July. WCJB
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Gainesville announced updated road closures from May 23–30, including the closure of SW Eighth Avenue between SW 13th Street and SW 12th Street on Tuesday, May 27 and the closure of SE 21st Street between SE Second Avenue and SE Second Place from May 27 to June 4. Additional closures on NW First Street with detours until June 30 and NW Sixth Street with single‐lane closures until May 31 may affect local traffic — the update covers only city‐maintained roads.
