  • Gainesville officials and residents gathered at the new City Hall Plaza on Wednesday morning to launch the sixth annual Journey to Juneteenth celebrations with a flag raising.   • The Repurpose Project announced it will open a new donation center (Dystopian Dollar) next to its existing thrift and hardware stores on Northeast 23rd Avenue.   • Film crews transformed downtown Micanopy into an 1860s south Georgia town with red clay and period signage for 'A Land Remembered.' The director is set to share insights as filming continues.  The Gainesville Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gainesville Teen Court programs prove effective in reducing repeat offenses, a study finds, as youth gain responsibility through civic engagement. The report recommends partnering with local schools to create structured Youth Civic Liaison Programs — a move hoped to boost community support and reduce recidivism.  The Independent Florida Alligator

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NOAA predicts a below normal hurricane season with eight to 14 storms starting on June 1 (experts warn that strong hurricanes may form later as El Niño strengthens), so residents should remain prepared.  The Gainesville Sun

  • Alachua County Veteran Services and partners will hold the annual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 25 at Evergreen Cemetery (401 SE 21st Ave.) in Gainesville. The free event starts at 10 a.m. with a complimentary lunch after the tribute.  Alachua Chronicle

  • Florida men’s golf won the Columbus Regional today with a 24-stroke lead — Luke Poulter set a career-best round after a rain delay. The team will meet national championship rivals at Omni La Costa’s North Course in Carlsbad on Saturday, May 29.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Gators center Rueben Chinyelu returned to Gainesville for the 2025‑26 season — forgoing the NBA Draft to retain college eligibility and join Thomas Haugh and Alex Condon to help reclaim a championship.   • Former Florida Gators player Mia Williams returns to Gainesville today with Texas Tech to start at second base in the Super Regional series beginning at 11 a.m. at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium; she left UF after two seasons amid coaching concerns & will have family watching in support.  The Gainesville Sun
  • The Florida Gators won the USA Today Network SEC All-Sports Trophy on May 21, marking their first overall title since 2017-18 and 29th in school history as they edged Texas with strong finishes in men’s basketball + women’s track and cross country.  The Gainesville Sun
  • The Saints softball team is playing in the NJCAA tournament for the first time since 2013 after a record-breaking season with 45 wins and key conference finishes. Their tournament run begins Monday against Odessa College in Oklahoma.  WCJB
