COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, over 20 work and training opportunities are available at the Reentry Community Job and Resource Fair at the Alachua County Library Headquarters from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.—local employers such as CareerSource North Central Florida and Santa Fe College aim to help justice-impacted job seekers connect with essential resources.  WCJB
  • TV20 launched a half-hour streaming exclusive newscast yesterday at 7 a.m. that delivers local news, traffic updates and extended weather forecasts on its website, mobile app and smart TVs (including additional weekday shows). The move expands news access through live streaming in north-central Florida.  WCJB

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Alachua County received an Innovative Partnership Award from the Florida Economic Development Council for its $36 million project turning Army Reserve investment into a job pipeline. The project — which includes a heavy diesel mechanic training program with Santa Fe College — aims to boost local job opportunities.  Alachua Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Twenty-two ACPS seniors have earned Associate of Arts degrees from Santa Fe College—and four have completed EMT certifications ahead of their high school graduation. The dual enrollment program helped them save over $130,000 in tuition and textbook costs while earning more than 1,500 college credit hours.  Alachua County Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gainesville leaders hope UF’s next president, Dr. Stuart Bell (former University of Alabama president), will build strong community ties and support key local projects on transit and health; his appointment awaits board and governor approval.  WCJB
  • Alachua County announced that due to Memorial Day the waste, recycling, and yard trash collection service will be delayed one day with Monday’s pickup now on Tuesday and Thursday’s on Friday; regular service will resume on Monday, June 1 (county offices and centers reopen on Tuesday).  Alachua Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Gators earned a No. 5 seed and a first-round bye in the SEC Tournament after sweeping LSU. They will play in Hoover today at 2 p.m. against the winner of Tuesday’s matchup between Vanderbilt and Kentucky.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Florida football recruited wide receiver Elias Pearl from Port Charlotte High for its 2027 class. Pearl, rated four stars (he chose Florida over offers from Georgia, Ole Miss, Auburn and Colorado) adds to the team's growing roster under coach Jon Sumrall.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Florida softball will host Texas Tech in the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional from May 22 to 24 at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. The best-of-three series starts Friday at 11 a.m. on ESPN2 with Saturday’s game on ABC.  GatorSports
