COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Alachua County Community Support Services and Gainesville Fire Rescue will host a community remembrance vigil at Squirrel Ridge Park on May 31 from 9 to 11 a.m. The vigil will honor survivors and families affected by gun violence and offer art stone tributes along with local support resources.  Alachua Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • Erica Nichol Williams (39) was arrested on May 17 for swinging a bat at another woman at Hickory Hills Apartments when a dispute over moving belongings escalated; law enforcement charged her with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felony battery.  Alachua Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida baseball will open SEC Tournament play on May 20 at 5:30 p.m. in Hoover, Ala as the 10-seed team faces 15-seed South Carolina (the team swept South Carolina earlier this month).  GatorSports
  • Buchholz baseball lost 8-3 to St. Thomas Aquinas in the FHSAA Class 6A championship game at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers Saturday—receiving its state runner up trophy.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Third-seeded Florida beat Mercer 8 to 0 in Friday’s opening round at Pressly Stadium, with Mia Williams driving in four runs and Taylor Shumaker tying the Florida freshman record with her 19th home run in a five-inning win. The victory advanced Florida in the NCAA Gainesville Regional and set the stage for a regional title round later today at 1 p.m.—a critical contest in the tournament.  WRUF
  • Buchholz baseball seniors left their mark on the program after advancing to the FHSAA Class 6A title game at Hammond Stadium on Saturday and finishing with a 33-3 record — a legacy that will guide future teams as they now move on from the program.  The Gainesville Sun
