CULTURE NEWS

  • At Heartwood Soundstage on May 14, jazz fusion bands Dionysus and the Michael Feinberg Trio performed live for a small group of local fans. The bands played creative songs with lively beats and improvised solos—leaving the audience impressed and excited.  The Independent Florida Alligator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City Commission voted on May 15 to schedule a special election in November so residents can decide if GRU governance should return to the elected commission. The vote followed comments from 13 residents and a motion by Commissioner Bryan Eastman — with City Attorney Daniel Nee stating ballot language is needed by June 15 — as the commission prepares for upcoming sessions.  Alachua Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Gator lacrosse team beat Duke 11 to 9 at Dizney Stadium to advance to the Final Four. They led 9 to 2 at halftime (their highest gap so far) and held on after Duke's rally as Georgia Hoey made a key save with 54 seconds left (stopping the comeback).  WCJB
  • Buchholz baseball will face the Wharton Wildcats today in Fort Myers in the FHSAA Class 6A Final Four at 10 a.m.—the team aims to secure a spot in the state championship after a strong comeback in its region final.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Florida men’s golf won the Bremerton Regional with a score of 28-under-par+ and will now compete in their fifth straight National Championship from May 23-28 at the Omni La Costa North Course in Carlsbad. Head coach J.C. Deacon said the team will enjoy their win briefly+ then focus on winning a second national title in three years.  WRUF
  • Junior catcher Brody Donay hit the go-ahead home run and the No. 23 Florida Gators beat the No. 18 Alabama Crimson Tide 7—6 after coming back from a five-run deficit and handling injuries in the series opener.
