ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Hurricane Center will resume daily tropical outlooks on Friday, May 15 to track disturbances showing potential for storm development. The outlooks (issued four times a day) will continue through Nov. 30.  The Gainesville Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gainesville will close West University Avenue from NW 17th Street to Gale Lemerand Drive on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16 from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. for Morgan Wallen's concert at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, so drivers should plan ahead + allow extra travel time.  Alachua Chronicle
  • SW 20th Avenue will close between SW 34th Street and SW 38th Terrace from Monday, May 18 to Thursday, May 21 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly for Zaya Project construction (formerly Gilbane Apartments); drivers must use detours along SW 38th Terrace and Hull Road while residents keep home access.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Windstream installed over 80% of its high-speed internet in rural Alachua County, reaching about 4,000 locations in under a year. County commissioners raised concerns about service in Archer and pricing, and the company will look into connecting homes in that area.  The Gainesville Sun

  • The former Birdie Box property on Southwest 13th was sold for $1.2M to Miami-based Alphabet Capital Group, which plans a 93-unit student apartment complex — a design for modern student and professional living in Gainesville.  The Gainesville Sun

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida baseball will travel to Baton Rouge today for a three-game series against LSU after wins over Oklahoma and Kentucky lifted the team to sixth in the SEC, with Caden McDonald posting strong hitting and pitching that may secure a tournament bye.  WRUF
  • Four regional softball teams advanced to today's finals after winning semifinal games with Trinity Catholic, Santa Fe, Columbia and GHS defeating The First Academy, Nature Coast Tech, Arnold and Wesley Chapel respectively; Madison County also won a 9-inning game over Branford.  WCJB
  • The Gators track and field team will run at the SEC Outdoor Championships today through May 16 at Hutsell-Rosen Track (Auburn) as the women aim for a triple crown and the men try to move up from a fourth-place finish.  The Independent Florida Alligator
