CRIME NEWS

  • Gainesville police arrested Randy Harry Simmons, Jr., 21 on May 13 after he allegedly pistol-whipped a 66-year-old woman in the pool area of Summit House Apartments and robbed her of cash and a diamond ring while leaving her with a broken nose and wrist—officers found blood trails, lost ammunition and Simmons hiding under a truck.  Alachua Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UF’s College of Education appointed Carrie Geiger as the new director of P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School on Tuesday afternoon. Geiger brings over 13 years of administration experience and 21 years of teaching experience in local schools — she replaces Lynda Hayes, who remains as interim director during the leadership change.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Carrie Geiger has been named the new director of P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School at UF and brings over 13 years in administration + more than 21 years teaching experience with ACPS. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will start June 1 and forecasters predict above-normal storms including Andrea as the first storm, with the National Hurricane Center beginning tropical outlooks on May 15—residents are urged to check their flood risk and evacuation zones and update their disaster kits as advisory changes take effect.  The Gainesville Sun

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida Softball is hosting the Gainesville Regional from May 16 to May 18 at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium (teams from Georgia Tech, FAU, and Mercer will compete in a double-elimination tournament) and fans can pick up tickets and find parking options ahead of the games. Game times start at 2 p.m. on Friday and run through Sunday with broadcasts on ESPN networks.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Florida’s men’s golf team won its 17th SEC Championship on April 27 and began NCAA Regional play on May 12 when Jack Turner clinched the final point against Auburn; it will seek a spot at the NCAA Championship on May 16 (hosted by the University of Washington). The women’s team won five tournaments and will compete in the NCAA National Championships next week as it aims for a national title.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Florida basketball coach Todd Golden earned a contract extension worth $40.5 million over six years, with his salary set at $6.75 million per year until 2031—making him the fourth highest-paid NCAA coach.   • UF engineering students Mollie Brewer and Kevin Childs presented research in Japan on how coaches use data from wearable sensors to plan training and prevent injuries—part of the AI-Powered Athletics project with the University Athletic Association. Their paper studied data from five teams and 17 coaches and will help improve sports coaching.  The Gainesville Sun
