- ➤ A grand jury brought a charge of first-degree murder against former mayoral candidate Adam Rosenthal last week, as reported by the Pulaski Citizen. WCJB

- ➤ Elementary school teacher Wanda Lloyd, who has danced in Gainesville since 2014 to help fund local STEAM summer camps, will receive the Patricia Hilliard-Nunn Cultural Ambassador Award at 6 p.m. May 16 at Rosa B. Williams Center during the 5th Avenue Arts Festival. Her group Smooth Flava Dance GNV offers free Dallas/Fort Worth swing-out dance lessons—backed by monthly dues—to support scholarships for students in need of summer programs. The Gainesville Sun
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UF announced it will cut funding for more than half of RTS bus routes starting July 1—many routes will be merged or eliminated, which could reduce service for students and other riders. A protest on May 8 outside Rawlings Hall saw community members, including union representatives and former drivers, urging UF to reconsider these changes for better support of low-income and disabled riders. - ➤ UF graduate students are watching closely as President Santa J. Ono—formerly of Michigan—prepares to lead UF, with many fearing his prior focus on undergrad life may lead to continued challenges in improving graduate pay and union negotiations. - ➤ Per Nilsson’s first season as head coach ended with a 9-14 record and marked the first time the Florida women’s tennis team did not qualify for the NCAA National Championships since 1986—injuries and a thin roster caused major challenges. - ➤ The Buchholz Bobcats beat Pace 5-4 in extra innings last Saturday at Pace High School to win the Region 1-6A title and move on to the state semifinals in Fort Myers. - ➤ Florida sophomore Alex Condon, who helped seal the national championship win, must decide by May 28 whether to stay in the NBA Draft as he trains ahead of the combine in Chicago—he said he would remain if teams guarantee him a 15—30 draft position. - ➤ The Gators beat No. 1 Texas in Austin—freshman Aidan King threw seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts, earning Florida its first series win against a top-ranked team since 2016.
