ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Friday, Gainesville Fire Rescue arrived at Summit House Apartments at 12:01 a.m. and quickly extinguished a fire in a second-floor kitchen while rescuing a cat and evacuating residents — the fire remains under investigation.  Mainstreet Daily News

CRIME NEWS

  • Donald Anthony Dohrn, Jr., 34 was arrested yesterday at GRACE Marketplace after police responded to an overdose when his mother was taken to the hospital for fentanyl poisoning—officers found trafficking amounts of fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, crack cocaine and marijuana, and he now faces multiple drug charges.  Alachua Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Retired UF faculty sent a letter to President Fuchs on Thursday condemning the decision to allow ICE agents on campus and urging the university to withdraw from the ICE 287(g) program. The letter (signed by over 250 retirees from every college) calls for transparency and support for international students, faculty, and staff and was also sent to UF leadership and local representatives.  WCJB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Alachua County Commission will hold its regular meeting Tuesday, May 13 at 11:30 a.m. in the Jack Durrance Auditorium at the County Administration Building — the public can comment by calling in at noon.  Alachua Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Gators built a 6 run lead in the first inning and defeated top ranked Texas 8 to 2 with strong pitching from Pierce Coppola and Billy Barlow. The win moves the team, now 12 to 13 in conference play, one win away from a regional bid.  WCJB
