COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Women’s Giving Circle, celebrating 19 years of philanthropy, awarded $150,000 in grants on May 8 to support projects that empower women and girls—this includes a $100,000 Impact Grant to Family Promise—Essential Housing Program and $5,000 Catalyst Grants to nine local organizations funded by 153 donors.  Alachua Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • Alachua County sheriff’s deputies increased their presence at Kanapaha Middle School after students received a text today threatening a school shooting + officials alerted parents and said investigators do not consider the threat credible after it was made on Thursday.  WCJB
  • A Jacksonville man, 26-year-old Christian Glenn Rogers, was arrested Saturday evening at a Hardee’s drive-thru in High Springs after an argument escalated into an alleged gun threat when he retrieved a loaded 9mm handgun—police charged him with battery and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and set bail at $10,000.  Alachua County Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 12, 18 scouts—including local scout James Hutchison—attended a surveying workshop hosted by UF’s School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences at the UF/IFAS Austin Cary Forest Campus off Waldo Road where they earned their Surveying Merit Badge. The workshop featured hands-on lessons led by experts from local surveying firms (such as Noble Precision Technologies and 3002 Surveying) and introduced scouts to future career opportunities in mapping and surveying.  Alachua County Today
  • At Tuesday’s meeting, the Alachua County School Board approved a first reading on revised Behavior Resource Teacher roles and sent a letter of intent to partner with the City of Gainesville for redeveloping Citizens Field—public comments will be considered at a June 3 hearing at 6:30 p.m. In a separate vote, the board ended the year-round calendar at Marjorie K.   • Alachua County has transformed motels into 67 housing units to help combat homelessness—this project aims to provide residents with the resources needed for independent living.  WCJB

  • Trinity Catholic's softball team advanced to Class 2A semifinals with a 4-2 win over Keystone Heights—set to play next Tuesday. Buchholz baseball aims to force Game 3 at Pace after an 11-4 loss in Game 1.  WCJB
