ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A large pole barn in High Springs caught fire on May 4 and officials contained the blaze—no injuries were reported.  WCJB

CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies arrested 23-year-old Zaytarious Joequan Chisolm for the killing of 21-year-old Aaviel Javion Hester-Guadalupe at Reflections Apartment—police said a Five Star Pizza box found on the counter led them to him after he had stayed at the victim's home for nearly a week.  WCJB
  • Deputies arrested 33-year-old Jerrell Johnson on Friday at a Circle K on Southwest 13th Street—he allegedly struck a shift manager, breaking her eardrum and damaging about $400 in computer equipment—and he now faces charges of aggravated battery and criminal mischief.  WCJB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Florida named Santa J. Ono, the president of the University of Michigan, as its only finalist for the next president. He will visit Gainesville on May 6 to meet with students, faculty and administrators—if confirmed by the board of trustees and state officials, he will replace Ben Sasse.  The Gainesville Sun
  • The University of Florida announced its Presidential Search Committee unanimously recommended Santa J. Ono, Ph.D., as the sole finalist for the next president on May 4th — his nomination now awaits review by the Board of Trustees.  WCJB

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Florida Gators scored sixteen of their twenty-two runs in the final three innings as they beat the Gamecocks 22 to 3 on May 4—earning their fourth straight SEC series win.  WCJB
  • On Sunday, the Gators swept South Carolina with an 8 to 0 win that earned their 11th conference victory and marked coach Kevin O’Sullivan’s 750th win of his career (their first series win in Columbia since 2018) despite a three-hour rain delay that pushed the start to 10:15 p.m. local time.  WCJB
