COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ More than 500,000 books are on sale on North Main Street from Monday through Wednesday to benefit the Alachua County Library; prices range from twenty-five cents to four dollars with Tuesday items half off and Wednesday items costing 10 cents. All proceeds support community literacy projects & the library district, and a follow-up sale is planned for October 25th to 29th. WCJB
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 61-year-old man from Crystal River died and three people were critically injured when a driver passed illegally in a double-yellow zone on County Road 235 at 6:04 p.m. on Sunday—emergency responders transported the injured to UF Health Shands Hospital and closed the road for several hours. - ➤ Timothy Thomas, 35—accused of killing a Buchholz High School student in 2010—is now charged with shooting and killing a man in South Florida in 2015. WCJB
- ➤ Amanda Janzen was sentenced to life in prison for killing Anna Terrill during a custody swap at a Gainesville Walgreens on Christmas Day 2023—bringing Terrill's family long-awaited justice after a painful loss. WCJB

- ➤ On April 28, the Florida Department of Education said that all 83 local education agencies certified they meet Title VI rules—final documents were sent to the U.S. Department of Education. Alachua Chronicle
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ During alligator mating season (April through June), increased gator activity means residents may see gators in their yards and pools while the FWC's Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program offers free removal services via its hotline 866-392-4286. Residents are warned not to handle or shoot a gator without a permit as doing so is illegal. The Gainesville Sun
- ➤ At Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo, 10 rescued gopher tortoises now live in a safe haven where they graze and burrow after suffering injuries from car accidents, dog attacks and a tractor. Conservation experts from UF Zoo Medicine care for the tortoises as the species faces threats from Florida development—ensuring the tortoises have a chance at a long life. - ➤ Gainesville is launching a program that offers free ADU plans for residents to build accessory dwelling units — part of a new affordable housing effort — and is constructing two prototype units on a city-owned property.
