- ➤ Homes For Our Troops is building a new accessible home in Alachua for Army veteran Carlos Rivera who moved from Tennessee—his home will have more than 40 modifications and is expected to be finished this summer. WCJB
- ➤ The Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale started on April 26 at 430 North Main Street and will run for five days to support library programs. Today the doors are open from noon to 6 p.m. (offering donated books, games, and media at low prices). Alachua Chronicle
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Daren Gary Smith, 58, who was on pre-trial release, was arrested early on April 26 after he allegedly chased a man with a machete at a Walmart bus stop near Gainesville — he now faces an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge and is held without bail amid his long criminal history. - ➤ Lejean Leonardo Brown, 31, was arrested on April 26 after allegedly pointing a .45 caliber handgun at his girlfriend during an argument at their Springtree home; police recovered the loaded weapon and he was held without bail pending a hearing. Alachua Chronicle

- ➤ Santa Fe College’s Institute of Public Safety is hosting an open house on May 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kirkpatrick Center where visitors can tour training facilities, view simulators and watch the Gainesville Police Department’s SMART Motorcycle Rodeo—an event for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
