- ➤ The Amazing Give—a 12-hour online fundraiser hosted by the Junior League of Gainesville—raised $1,128,942 on April 24 to support 118 local nonprofits in North Central Florida. Donations for these organizations remain open until April 28. Alachua Chronicle
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Terrell Edward Gladin, 41, was arrested yesterday near Tiger Bay Apartments after he broke into three units at around 8:38 a.m. on April 24 - he threatened one resident with a Sawzall blade, dragged another from her apartment, stole personal items, and now faces charges including armed burglary, kidnapping and resisting arrest. - ➤ King Banks—a 13-year-old Kanapaha Middle School student—repeatedly sent threatening messages and used gang signs between April 15 and April 24, which led to his arrest for aggravated cyberstalking and placement in Juvenile Detention Center. Alachua Chronicle
- ➤ Gainesville police are searching for a gunman after three people were shot at an Easter egg hunt on April 20 at T.B. McPherson park. City leaders, including Mayor Harvey Ward and gun violence prevention officials, said the incident will lead to new permitting measures for large events — officials plan to review the policy for better safety. - ➤ On April 12, 18 Scouts earned the Surveying Merit Badge at UF/IFAS Austin Cary Forest Campus where experts taught them how to use surveying tools and learn mapping skills. The program helped Scouts like James Hutchison see new job opportunities in surveying—an effort UF hopes to expand next year. Alachua Chronicle
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ UF Therapy Night, a free mental health counseling program run by UF student volunteers in clinical psychology, has expanded its weekly Monday sessions to help Floridians statewide facing challenges like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and suicidal thoughts. The program treated over 200 patients last year under the guidance of six licensed psychologists (with 43 trainees involved) and now accepts referrals from both medical professionals and self-referrals amid limited advertising funding. - ➤ The Saint Francis Catholic Wolves baseball team, led by coach Rob Brown, enters Monday’s 1A-Region 2 Semifinal in Maitland with a record of 21 wins and 7 losses after winning a district championship and a quarterfinal game over Oak Hall. They will face Orangewood Christian at 7 p.m. Monday — game two is set for Tuesday and a potential game three will be on Thursday if needed. WRUF
- ➤ Florida baseball began its three-game SEC series against No. 5 Arkansas at Condron Family Ballpark on Friday. Today at 3 p.m., the Gators will take the field with Aidan King on the mound as the game airs on SEC Network (and local radio). WRUF
- ➤ Florida softball is building momentum as the Gators, currently ranked No. 6 in the ESPN poll, plan to boost their postseason chances by winning upcoming SEC series.
