- ➤ UF College of Health & Human Performance honored Robert “Goose” Basford today as Outstanding Young Alumnus for his work in parks and recreation—he once interned locally and led community projects in High Springs before taking on public works responsibilities in Jersey Village. - ➤ On Thursday, the Community Foundation of North Central Florida and the Junior League of Gainesville will host The Amazing Give, a 12-hour online fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. that supports local nonprofits while the Gainesville Elks Lodge promotes donations to help organizations like the girls’ place. - ➤ A Newberry man with a long criminal record was arrested on outstanding warrants after he allegedly threatened a shootout with police and aimed a gun at his girlfriend at Gardenia Gardens Apartments in Gainesville on March 22 at 11:50 p.m.—witnesses reported loud yelling and object throwing just before the arrest. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At a special meeting this morning, the School Board ratified a three-year contract with instructional personnel for the 2024-25 school year that raises pay for eligible teachers by adding a 1.3% increase to all salary steps and providing permanent base increases for Highly Effective and Effective teachers. The deal—costing over $3.2 million with funds from state teacher salary allocations and the General Fund—offers retroactive increases beginning with the new contract year. Alachua Chronicle
- ➤ Santa Fe College was named an Opportunity College on Thursday by the Carnegie Foundation and American Council on Education because its diverse student body and strong post-graduation earnings show its commitment to student success.
