  • On Sunday afternoon, a 60-acre wildfire threatened the Humane Society when a Facebook post led residents to foster 40 dogs and 18 cats in 98 minutes—demonstrating strong community support during an emergency.  WCJB
  • In Gainesville and Alachua County, local agencies are teaming up to study family homelessness and plan long-term solutions (leaders say the issue is growing).  WUFT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kanapaha Middle School's Wind Ensemble won first place at the Smoky Mountain Music Festival yesterday in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The 39-member group earned a score of 95.67 and two members received solo honors in its first out-of-state performance.  The Gainesville Sun

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A map shows Gainesville and other north Florida areas need about 25 inches of rain over three months to ease ongoing drought conditions as officials warn that burn bans in 40 counties add pressure amid worsening wildfire risks. Firefighting teams are being staged and the rainy season is expected by mid-May.  The Gainesville Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wildfires burning across the county led officials to declare a Local State of Emergency and extend the countywide burn ban through today to protect lives and property as smoke lowers air quality in Gainesville. The measure gives officials power to respond swiftly while one large fire holds 106 acres (25% contained).  Alachua County Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida men’s golf tied for third after Jack Turner recorded a career-low 64 today at Sea Island Golf Club at the SEC Championship. The team shot 11-under and will begin match play Saturday as competitors finish the round.  WRUF
  • Florida defensive lineman Caleb Banks was picked 18th overall by the Minnesota Vikings during the NFL Draft (despite a foot injury at the Heavener Facility) and local scouts say his talent (and performance) makes him a promising pick.  WCJB
