COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 15 Gainesville community members gathered at a campus vigil on Wednesday afternoon to honor the victims of the April 17 FSU shooting — student leaders and Mayor Harvey Ward urged lawmakers to change gun policies to better support those affected by gun violence.  The Independent Florida Alligator

CRIME NEWS

  • Oladapo Fadugba was indicted by a federal court for wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and making a false statement in a citizenship proceeding after he allegedly used fraudulent faxes and emails to redirect $690,000 in VA payments meant for UF Health into his own account, and he was arrested on April 18 before being released later that day with a federal public defender assigned.  The Gainesville Sun

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fest 23 will take place in Gainesville from October 24 to 26 with headliners including Propagandhi, Dillinger Four, Jeff Rosenstock, and Gainesville native Laura Jane Grace—leading her new band, The Mississippi Medicals. The festival adds comedy, wrestling and a flea market to its lineup, and tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10 a.m.  The Gainesville Sun
  • On April 16, the University of Florida’s Hispanic Student Association held a Night of Museum at La Casita and the Afro-American Culture Institute to mark its 40-year legacy with nine exhibits that showcased oral histories, art installations, and dance classes — the event honored the campus’s Hispanic and Latinx community. Additional events continued on April 17 and 18 to further celebrate the organization’s impact and cultural history.  The Independent Florida Alligator

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gainesville’s Azena Health & Longevity provides concierge anti-aging care using personalized tests and treatments like hormone replacement therapy, and provider Morgan Burns treats about 120 clients monthly to improve fitness and cognition. The clinic is preparing to add blood plasma transfusion & ozone therapy to further clear toxins from patients’ blood.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • UF Health officials announced a new multiyear agreement with United Healthcare that will take effect May 5 and restore network access for thousands of patients in Gainesville, Jacksonville, St. Johns and Central Florida—ensuring they continue to receive care from UF Health hospitals and physicians. The agreement is set to reduce administrative costs and improve care management for the network.  Alachua Chronicle

  • The Florida Gators men's basketball team announced new assistant coaches—NYU head coach Dave Klatzky and Jonathan Safir—and added new players including Princeton transfer point guard Xaivian Lee and top-ranked freshman CJ Ingram, while guard AJ Brown visited the program to explore his opportunity.  WRUF
  • Luke Heyman hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning on April 23 to give the Gators a 12-1 run-rule win at Condron Family Ballpark over Georgia Southern. The win improved Florida’s record to 28-15 (coach Kevin O’Sullivan said the midweek game saved pitching for the weekend series) (the series against Arkansas starts Friday at 6:30 p.m.).  WRUF
  • JJ Gardner has led Buchholz High baseball since playing youth ball and now guides the team on the mound while excelling at the plate. He has recorded over 45 strikeouts this season and increased his pitching speed from about 80 to 92 miles per hour — and he will join Jacksonville University next season.  WCJB
