CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 23 year old Gainesville woman died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen after arriving at UF Health Shands just before 5 a.m. on April 22 + detectives later released her husband after questioning. WCJB
- ➤ Detectives questioned a man after he brought his wife to UF Health Shands with a gunshot wound to the abdomen just before 5 a.m.; she died in the hospital and investigators later treated their home on the 100 block of Northwest 7th Terrace as a crime scene. WCJB
- ➤ Detective Donna Montague of Gainesville PD’s child sex crimes unit has worked 23 years on sensitive cases and now leads a four-member team that has seen a 100% rise in cases since January, resulting in new local arrests including a daycare operator sentenced to 40 years (she earned a national award in digital forensics in April). HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ UF students danced nonstop for 26.2 hours at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center on April 5-6 and raised $1,351,566.99 for UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital. The funds will be used to renovate pediatric care areas (Units 44 and 45) and support hospital programs. Alachua Chronicle

- ➤ Florida beat Georgia Southern 12-1 in a walk-off win Tuesday evening at Condron Family Ballpark; Luke Heyman hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to keep the team perfect in midweek matchups. WCJB
- ➤ The No. 7 Florida softball team will host USF today at 6 p.m. at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. The Gators are coming off a conference series win against No. 17 Alabama — they last beat the Bulls 8-0 in five innings on February 9. WRUF
- ➤ Buchholz Bobcats finished their regular season with a 26–1 record and earned the No. 1 seed in the FHSAA 6A State Championships — they will host the first two games of the regional quarterfinal series today against First Coast High School. WRUF
- ➤ The Florida men’s basketball team won a national title on April 8—its first since 2007—and Gainesville fans now watch the football team build hope as freshman quarterback DJ Lagway stepped in after Graham Mertz was injured while the coach kept key players on the team to boost chances for a national championship run next season. - ➤ The Easton Newberry Archery Center in Newberry is hosting the 2025 World Archery Youth Championship Trials today where archers in the under-21 and under-18 classes will shoot 72 arrows to earn a spot on the U.S. team. After the trials, the center will hold a three-day Gator Cup contest with nearly 700 archers competing — including Olympic athletes Brady Ellison, Catalina GNoriega, Casey Kaufhold and Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez.
