CRIME NEWS

  • Melissa Marie Ann Theus, 33, was arrested yesterday on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after she allegedly threatened a woman by retrieving a handgun from her car and pointing it at her during a 3:30 p.m. argument outside a Gainesville residence off Archer Road and NE 73rd Avenue—witnesses helped confirm the account and she was later apprehended when she returned for her belongings.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Students across Florida remain in shock after an FSU shooting—UF police increased campus presence following the news while one student sheltered in place at her sorority house for four hours.  WCJB
  • Limackie Lee Classy McMahon (26) and La’naysha Anteria Samuel (18) were arrested on April 20th after they allegedly assaulted deputies trying to break up a brawl at 1116 W. University Avenue around 3:26 a.m., with McMahon shoving one officer and Samuel attempting to punch another, and both are charged with disorderly conduct and battery-related offenses.  Alachua Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Alachua County 4-H Envirothon Team won first place at the Florida Envirothon on April 20 at the Withlacoochee State Forest McKethan Lake Recreation Area in Brooksville—these students will represent Florida at the international NCF Envirothon in Calgary from July 20 to 26.  Alachua Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • On April 20, the Florida track team closed the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational at Percy Beard Track with a 3:01.52 4x400m relay run by Schwartzman, Braun, Prude Jr. and McKiver to regain the NCAA lead. Justin Braun also set a season best in the 400m and the team broke several college records+ they will run next at the LSU Invite on May 3.  WRUF
  • The Gainesville High School girls lacrosse team finished a historic season with a 16-4 record after focusing on teamwork and basic skills in preseason training—an effort that helped them become district runners-up; they will face Oak Hall in the state championship regional quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday.  WRUF
  • Steve Spurrier, the famed Florida Gators coach and player, returned to Gainesville earlier this week to play golf with his son and UF coaches on Mark Bostick golf course and now serves as UF's ambassador while his Gridiron Grille continues to attract fans and recruits. He will turn 80 on Sunday (a milestone birthday) and his ongoing commitment to UF enriches our community.  The Gainesville Sun
