COMMUNITY NEWS

  • One of the five palm trees planted nearly 25 years ago as a memorial for the 1990 student murder victims appears to have died from lethal bronzing near the memorial panel on Southwest 34th Street. City Commissioner Bryan Eastman said FDOT has tested the tree—if the test is positive, the tree will be replaced while Mayor Harvey Ward has suggested using permanent markers instead of living trees.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Gainesville residents joined the Great American Cleanup on Saturday morning, gathering trash from Depot Park, downtown, and other areas. The event, organized by Keep Alachua County Beautiful, aimed to protect local wild spaces (important for future generations).  WUFT

CRIME NEWS

  • Gainesville man Joseph Causton Adle, 33, was sentenced on April 17 to 60 days in jail — two years of probation for stalking and trespassing after following a woman at The Ridge for about five months, and he must undergo mental health evaluation and meet treatment requirements while avoiding the complex.  Alachua Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Fe College held its Annual Student Art Show at the college gallery starting Friday, April 18 — it will run until May 2. The juried show displays work from fall and spring art classes as local muralist Jenna Horner picked awards, including an honorable mention for Greta Reichenbach’s oil painting inspired by campus vultures.  WUFT

SPORTS NEWS

  • No. 8 Florida softball beat No. 17 Alabama with a 4—3 walk-off win on Saturday at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium to take the series. Korbe Otis made the winning hit to give the team its first SEC series win at home.  WRUF
  • Florida lacrosse secured its 11th straight win with a 20-2 victory over Cincinnati on Saturday, with redshirt junior goalkeeper Elyse Finnelle making eight key saves. The team controlled every quarter and will face Arizona State in its regular-season finale on April 26 at Donald R. Dizney Stadium.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Florida’s women’s golf team fell to South Carolina in the final round of the SEC Championship — wins over LSU and Arkansas helped them reach match play. The Gators will now prepare to compete in NCAA Regionals beginning May 5 — with location selection on April 23.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • On Friday night the Florida baseball team beat Mississippi State by 13 to 3 at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville. The Gators are on a six-game winning streak and will send pitcher Aidan King to start Game 2 at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN+98.1 FM and 850 AM WRUF+WJXL 1010 AM.  WRUF
