CRIME NEWS

  • ACSO is investigating the death of 21-year-old Aaviel Javion Hester-Guadalupe as a homicide after deputies discovered him unresponsive at Reflections Apartments in southwest Gainesville at 10:40 a.m. on April 13 while answering a medical emergency call.  The Gainesville Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Kurtis Gurley (Associate Director at ESSIE) at the University of Florida is studying cost-effective wind-resilient construction methods using wind tunnel tests and real hurricane data to guide updates in building codes and lower insurance costs. He hopes the new methods will make homes and communities stronger after hurricanes.  WCJB
  • Officials announced that 18 local high school students—15 from Buchholz High School and three from PAM@LHS—earned awards at the FBLS State Leadership Conference and qualified to compete in the national Future Business Leaders of America competition this summer; nearly 6,000 students participated in over 50 business events at the state contest.  WCJB
  • Residents protested the school board's policy on cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during today's meeting. Board officials said they trained principals to handle any ICE visit by seeking warrants and notifying parents.  WCJB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Last Monday in San Antonio, Florida basketball won a national title without a top 100 recruit + coach Todd Golden built the team by recruiting players who worked hard. The Gators will add top local talent next season + rivals are expected to give their best effort to dethrone them.  GatorSports
  • After a busy spring game last Saturday, Gators head coach Billy Napier announced awards that honored players for growth and leadership including freshman quarterback DJ Lagway and wide receiver Eugene Wilson III—recognizing excellence on and off the field. The awards also spotlighted veteran contributions and community service as the team prepares for its season opener on August 30—setting the stage for an exciting fall campaign.  WRUF
  • Florida lacrosse beat Stetson 20—4 after scoring 10 goals in the second quarter to secure its 10th win in a row. The team will face Cincinnati in Gainesville on Saturday at noon.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • UF’s men's basketball team won the national championship on April 7—its first title since 2007—and the victory united students, staff, and fans in a strong display of community pride.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • ESPN’s Jeff Borzello released his early Top 25 ranking for the upcoming men’s college basketball season—Houston is the top pick. The defending champion Florida Gators are ranked at No. 19 as Purdue, Louisville, UConn and Michigan round out the top five.  WRUF
  • The Florida Gators football team showed strong promise from its young receivers in the recent Orange and Blue game. Freshman Dallas Wilson tied a record with 195 receiving yards on 10 catches and two touchdowns—while fellow freshmen Naeshaun Montgomery and Vernell Brown III also made key contributions.  WRUF
