COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Cedar Key celebrated the expansion of a volunteer-run food pantry Sunday afternoon after months of delays from hurricanes and fires—volunteers have supported the service since 2002. The pantry now operates in a new building gifted by a local owner and offers food, disaster relief, social, V.A. and mental health services every Wednesday from 2 to 4:30—helping meet the community's ongoing needs.  WCJB

CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ASO) investigated a death in an apartment at Reflections Apartments (205 Southwest 75th Street) on Sunday morning and have not determined the cause or any criminal involvement.  WCJB
  • Anecio Jorden Torres, 23, was arrested yesterday morning after allegedly threatening to shoot his girlfriend during an argument on April 12 at College Studios—police said he pushed the victim and handled his gun while she hid in her bathroom—and he now faces charges of domestic aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and domestic battery with bail set at $60,000.  Alachua Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • On April 11 and 12, Gainesville hosted the Big: Culture & Arts Festival in downtown where food and clothing vendors, musicians and artists gathered. Founders Jahi Khalfani and Laila Fakhoury planned the event—offering free massages and art displays—to create a lasting space for local creative work.  The Independent Florida Alligator

SPORTS NEWS

  • The No. 8 Florida Gators lost their series finale to the No. 19 Ole Miss Rebels on Sunday as a grand slam by senior designated player Aliyah Binford—her blast that gave Ole Miss an 8–6 win—ended Florida’s chance to complete an SEC series sweep.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Two standout brothers Jordan and Cameron Dixon from Gainesville High signed their National Letters of Intent to play football at Brevard College in North Carolina—Jordan recorded 10 solo tackles and 25 total tackles while Cameron made 14 solo tackles and 35 overall during his senior season.  WCJB
  • The No. 8 Gators lost 8—6 to the No. 19 Rebels after winning the first two games of the series on April 13 in Oxford. Ole Miss scored five runs in the fourth inning on a grand slam and a pinch-hit home run while Florida's Mia Williams hit a three-run homer, but the Rebels held on.  WRUF
  • UF quarterback DJ Lagway did not throw in Saturday's Orange and Blue Game because of a shoulder injury and was limited to dropbacks and handoffs during spring practice. Head coach Billy Napier said he will start throwing in a couple weeks—he expects Lagway to be fully ready by summer workouts.  WCJB
  • Saint Francis Wolves ended their regular season on Friday with a 7 to 1 win over Dixie County, improving to a 17 to 6 record — the game was called early in the sixth inning due to a severe storm and saw pitcher Sawyer Williams log five shutout innings with six strikeouts. The team will host Peniel Baptist Academy on Tuesday in the 1A-District 5 Tournament as the top seed.  WRUF
  • Santa Fe High School senior Brooklyn McDougall signed her National Letter of Intent to play softball at Lake-Sumter State College while her family, friends, and teammates cheered her on. She impressed coaches as a four-year varsity player—throwing over 40 strikeouts in two seasons and finishing last year with a 9-0 record and a 2.5 ERA.  WCJB
