- ➤ Assurance, a new Gainesville-based nonprofit founded by Virginia Grant, connects caregivers in Alachua County to legal, emotional, financial, medical and social support—designed to ease time management, stress and resource challenges. - ➤ Joseph Harold Wiggs, 22, was arrested last night after he allegedly threatened a dating partner with a handgun and kicked a police officer during his arrest on April 8—he now faces charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, battery on a law enforcement officer, and resisting an officer without violence. - ➤ More than ninety people gathered in Turlington Plaza on Wednesday at noon to protest the deportation of Colombian UF student Felipe Zapata Velasquez after his arrest for driving with an expired license led to ICE custody last week. - ➤ Alachua County and local partners will host Earth Day 2025 events under the theme Our Power, Our Planet with activities scheduled from April 19 to April 27 that include a Community Reuse and Recycle Day at Santa Fe College, a tree planting event at Lincoln Middle School, art exhibitions and volunteer opportunities—residents can join to learn sustainable practices at various sites. - ➤ UF students cast 9,611 ballots over two days and gave the Vision Party a clear win in the Student Senate—taking nearly all contested seats and all top executive roles.
