COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Monday, Apr. 6, the Community Foundation of North Central Florida awarded a $150,000 grant to GRACE Marketplace in Gainesville to help cover rising food costs and support growing demand for meals + services among residents.  Alachua Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • The fourth Big: Culture & Arts Festival will take place downtown from April 10–12, featuring 136 artists across eight stages. Organizers expect growing national interest and local support (including headliner Zack Fox) to boost the event's impact.  The Gainesville Sun
  • A free month-long poetry festival celebrating National Poetry Month and America 250 runs in Gainesville from April 9 to 26. The event, presented by ARTSPEAKSgnv Inc. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Robert Moramarco, a math teacher at Newberry High in his first year (an alumnus of Gainesville and Eastside), is among the top 15 candidates for America’s Favorite Teacher. He could win the contest offering a $25,000 prize and a feature in Reader’s Digest, hosted by Bill Nye’s non-profit.  WCJB
  • University of Florida graduate programs earned top marks in U.S. News rankings today, with the College of Education rising to No. 2 and other programs ranking nationally in business, engineering + law. The rankings highlight the university’s strong academic standing as it continues to address leadership gaps.  The Gainesville Sun
  • The Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention will host Students Thinking Big on April 10 and 11 to showcase student innovation (pitch night on Friday, free exhibit on Saturday). HEALTH NEWS

  • Alachua County Fire Rescue has partnered with UF Health Shands to equip two emergency units with donated whole blood today in Gainesville to improve on-scene care for injured patients (only 1-2% of responders carry whole blood).  WCJB
  • Inspectors reported that during inspections from March 30 to April 5, several Alachua County restaurants had high-priority health violations. In Gainesville, Mother's Pub and Grill required follow-up after hand hygiene lapses (two High Springs eateries faced issues with wash station setup and food temperature control).  The Gainesville Sun

SPORTS NEWS

  • Liv McGill, the Gators’ leading scorer (22.5 ppg), entered the NCAA Division I women's basketball transfer portal on Monday, April 6, marking the first transfer announcement out of Gainesville. She broke the team record with 38 points against Chattanooga.  WCJB
  • Florida senior Micah Handlogten, the 7-foot-1 Gators center—who played three seasons locally after transferring from Marshall—intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal as it opens today to seek a waiver for a fifth-year eligibility.  WRUF
  • The No. 3 Florida Gators advanced to their 42nd NCAA Championship appearance by edging Georgia with a 198.05 score in the Tempe Regional Final — they now head to Fort Worth for the semifinals on Apr. 16 and the national championship on Apr. 18.  WRUF
  • Florida seniors Tanapatt Nirundorn and Pablo Perez Ramos lead the men's tennis team with strong records and veteran leadership as their final season unfolds.   • Florida star center Rueben Chinyelu became the first Gator to win the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award and earned SEC and NABC Defensive Player of the Year honors after a season with strong rebounding numbers and a 63-12 team record.  WRUF
