COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The city of Gainesville held a groundbreaking on Friday, April 4 to begin renovations at Tom Petty Park. The $1.97M project—funded by the Gainesville Wild Spaces and Public Places half‑cent sales tax—will remove four racquetball courts to add eight pickleball courts and upgrade park amenities, with work set to finish in early 2026.  WUFT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Santa Fe College Gallery will host its annual Student Art Show — a free exhibition that showcases student artwork in painting, ceramics, drawing and photography. The event will open with a reception and award ceremony on April 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. and run through May 2 at Building M, Room 147, 3000 Northwest 83rd Street in Gainesville.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Brycelynn Rivera, a junior at P.K. Yonge, won the 2025 FIRST Robotics Competition Dean’s List Finalist Award on April 4 for her leadership with the Roaring Riptide robotics team that helped improve assistive technology for children—she will compete at the FIRST World Championships in Houston from April 16-19.  Alachua Chronicle

  • Vanderbilt baseball is heading to Gainesville to face Florida in a SEC series with a game scheduled today at 12 p.m. at Condron Family Ballpark—Florida is grappling with injuries and a 1-8 conference record.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Florida Gators announced that their veteran offensive line—led by seniors Jake Slaughter and Austin Barber—will return for the 2025 season to boost the offense after strong improvements in pass and run blocking last year. Seven of eight linemen who started over 20% of snaps in 2024 are coming back to add depth and experience to the team.  WRUF
  • Florida basketball plays Auburn today at 6:09 p.m. at the Alamodome—after rallying from second-half deficits all season, the Gators may use grounding techniques practiced at a bayfront park to regain focus—underscoring their strong comeback spirit.  GatorSports
  • The Florida Gators are in the Final Four for the first time in over a decade and will soon meet Auburn after winning the SEC tournament. Voice of the Gators Sean Kelley said changes over the last eight weeks—such as missing players—have altered the matchup from their last encounter.  WCJB
