CULTURE NEWS

  • Songfest 2025 is a free concert and festival celebrating a cappella and choral music that will be held on Thursday, April 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Gainesville, and donations will be accepted at the door to support the ACPS Honor Choir program.  Alachua Chronicle
  • A dance battle that was part of a UF studio art project erupted Monday afternoon at Plaza of the Americas when student wizards Salizar The Great and Warlock Corpuis staged a duel to satirize modern political debates—Corpuis secured the win with energetic moves as about 40 spectators dressed in blue capes cheered the performance.   • ARTSPEAKSgnv, Inc. will present the 3rd Annual BARD & Broadside: North Central Florida Poetry Festival from April 5 to 26—this free multi-day event will feature poetry readings, creative writing workshops, storytelling, and competitions at various Gainesville venues. The schedule includes a teen poetry contest at the county library, a panel discussion on local history at the Matheson History Museum, and a poetry slam at VECINOS Neighborhood Restaurant and Bar.  Alachua Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gainesville Regional Utilities will perform a routine gas line pressure test this weekend that may cause loud noise and a rotten egg odor — residents near UF Health and the UF campus will face road closures on Archer Road and Mowry Road from 2 to 7 a.m. Sunday. GRU is working with Duke Energy and local police to manage detours during the test.  The Gainesville Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • Inspectors found that 13 restaurants (inspected March 24-30) had high-priority health violations such as unsafe food temperatures (seen at Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar, Bagels and Noodles, and Ballyhoo Grill) and poor sanitation practices. Owners must complete follow-up inspections and corrective actions to fix the issues.  The Gainesville Sun

  • Florida’s top-seeded Gators overcame a 9‐point deficit in their Elite 8 game as Walter Clayton Jr. scored 30 with five crucial three‐pointers and Thomas Haugh added 20 points and 11 rebounds — fueling an 18‐4 run to secure an 84‐79 win over Texas Tech — which sent the team to its first Final Four since 2014.  WRUF
  • High school spring sports in Gainesville are nearing the end of the regular season with boys and girls lacrosse finishing this week and flag football set to end soon. Teams like Buchholz, Oak Hall and Santa Fe are competing hard for playoff spots — local fans can expect exciting matchups as the postseason approaches.  The Gainesville Sun
  • The University of Florida Swimming and Diving earned 64 All-American honors from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association on April 1 with 22 student-athletes recognized, including 41 first team and 23 second team selections.
