  • The Children's Trust of Alachua County is hosting an Open House+ Building Dedication event today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its new office at 4010 N.W. 25th Place, where Executive Director Marsha Kiner and Board Chair Ken Cornell will speak before a noon ribbon-cutting ceremony marks the dedication of the organization's facility.  Alachua County Today

CRIME NEWS

  • Donrea Avril McLaughlin, 23, and Sean D. Lee, 28, were sentenced to 30 years in prison—followed by five years of probation—on March 28 after pleading nolo contendere to charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child and child neglect with great bodily harm that left a 3-year-old dead and another child injured.  Alachua Chronicle

  • The city of Gainesville reached out to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2811 near Citizens Field to discuss plans for redeveloping the 8th Avenue and Waldo Road complex—details that include two design scenarios and a May meeting to review potential changes. The VFW group said it does not plan to sell its five-acre property—waiting to see how the project unfolds before making any moves.  Mainstreet Daily News

  • No. 7 Florida lacrosse defeated UC Davis 16 to 10 in its Big 12 opener — freshman attacker Clark Hamilton and junior attacker Gianna Monaco each scored four goals. The Gators will return to Gainesville next Saturday at 10 a.m. to face San Diego State.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Today, the Florida Gators face the Texas Tech Red Raiders for a chance to advance to the Final Four—Florida is the No. 1 seed aiming for its sixth Final Four while Texas Tech, the No. 3 seed that rallied from a 16-point deficit in overtime, seeks its second. Florida advanced with a strong second-half win over Maryland and will now test Texas Tech’s high-scoring offense led by JT Toppin.  WRUF
  • Florida Gators men’s Tennis beat LSU Tigers 5-2 on March 28—extending their win streak to four and their SEC record to 6-3. The team, ranked No. 29 in ITA and fourth in the conference, will face Mississippi State Bulldogs today at 2 p.m.  WRUF
  • Florida Gators baseball dropped its fifth straight game Thursday after losing to No. 15 Ole Miss 7-5 at Swayze Field—pitchers allowed 13 walks, leaving the team winless in SEC play.  WRUF
  • Today, after two years of planning by the county and partners, the World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships has begun at the Gainesville indoor sports center with 3,700 athletes from 97 countries competing in events for those 35 and older. The event will run until March 30 with competitions, live music and family activities — efforts that boost local tourism and celebrate international sportsmanship.  WUFT
