CRIME NEWS

  • Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies are searching today for an armed suspect—a Black teenage boy about 5 feet tall wearing a gray shirt and orange basketball shorts—who attempted a carjacking in a northwest Gainesville neighborhood and urged nearby residents to shelter in place.  WCJB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At UF, only about 30% of College of Engineering graduates were women in 2023-2024 compared to 57% of all degree recipients. Programs like Girls Who Code, the Society of Women Engineers, and WiNGHacks help support women and nonbinary students in STEM fields.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • A group of students and former residents is planning a rally later today to stop changes at Maguire Village and University Village South — they want to keep on-campus housing available for current and future students.  WCJB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City of Gainesville completed a clean audit of its Fiscal Year 2024 report on March 25—proving that its finances are accurate and clear. City Manager Cynthia W. Curry said the financial team will now work on a new budget plan for Fiscal Year 2026—aiming to spend every dollar wisely.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Gainesville officials will host a test ride event for electric bikes on March 31 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the 6th Street Rail Trail at the Grove Street Farmers Market beside Cypress and Grove, where riders can try cargo, fat tire and commuter models and get safety education and maps of planned bike projects; Commissioner Bryan Eastman will also lead a 6.2-mile ride on March 29 at 9:30 a.m. at Depot Park to showcase current bike infrastructure.  WCJB
  • Florida's attorney general, James Uthmeier, issued a consumer alert on March 23 after 23andMe filed for bankruptcy, warning residents to protect their genetic data as the company continues operating during its sale process—residents are advised to delete their data by following the instructions on the account settings page.  The Gainesville Sun

SPORTS NEWS

  • Santa Fe College’s baseball team went 2–2 last week with an 8–5 win over Florida State College and two losses to College of Central Florida, while its softball team extended a six-game win streak with back-to-back series wins. The baseball team will play more games this week and the softball squad is set for doubleheaders on Tuesday and Saturday — key matchups that will shape their season.  WRUF
  • Jeremy Miranda, a longtime UF gymnastics assistant coach known for choosing from 150 button-down shirts to match his team’s leotards — he dances on the sidelines to cheer the gymnasts — has supported the Gators for 18 years. The team, which placed third at the SEC Championship, will head to NCAA Regionals from April 4-7 and hope to finish in the top four for a chance to compete at Nationals in Fort Worth, Texas.  The Independent Florida Alligator
