  • A completed memorial wall honoring 2,868 graduates of the former all-Black Lincoln High School was unveiled Saturday at Lincoln Middle School on SE 12th St. in Gainesville—bricks are being sold to cover the remaining $30,000 of its $140,000 cost.  The Gainesville Sun

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Forever 21 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday and asked a Delaware court to close 355 US stores—23 of which are in Florida, including The Oaks in Gainesville—citing inflationary pressures, decreased consumer spending, and tough competition. Sales will be finalized by April 30 while gift cards will be honored through April 15.  The Gainesville Sun

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Atlantic hurricane season will run from June 1 to Nov. 30, and after three hurricanes hit last year residents are urged to review emergency plans and gather supplies as predictions point to up to 15 tropical storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes. Officials advise checking evacuation zones and securing homes — essential steps for many newcomers amid a population surge of nearly 470,000 since last year — to help keep everyone safe.  The Gainesville Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • The University of Florida’s Small Animal Hospital will hold a free service animal eye exam event on May 16 in Gainesville where active service animals will receive eye and heart screenings from board-certified veterinarians (Drs. Caryn Plummer and Michael Aherne). Owners can schedule follow-up appointments by calling (352-392-2235) if more tests are needed.  WCJB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida won three SEC Tournament games in Nashville by a combined 45 points and now has 30 wins on the season—fans praised the team for breaking Tennessee's press for the 10th time and showing strong basketball IQ. The team now looks ahead to a challenge in Raleigh as they continue their impressive play.  WRUF
  • Reflecting on their 25th anniversary, the 1999-2000 Gators basketball team, led by coach Billy Donovan, turned a football school into a national contender and set the stage for future titles. Alumni like Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem continue to strengthen the program through coaching and mentoring—ensuring their legacy remains in Gainesville.  WRUF
