COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Newberry Lions Club hosts a free pancake breakfast fundraiser Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Newberry Building to help the Prum family rebuild after their house fire, with donations welcomed & community support strong.  WCJB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Frazer School students won first-place awards at the Alachua County Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Feb. 27 — their innovative projects in robotics, environmental engineering, and computational science advance them to the state competition in Lakeland from March 31-Apr. 2.  Alachua Chronicle
  • The school board requested updated rezoning maps for elementary, middle and high schools at a Thursday workshop to adjust closures and reassign zones, including keeping Rawlings open and shifting the STEM program from Foster, and plans to review the modified documents on March 3 with a vote on March 12.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • UF added 26 new general education courses from the Hamilton School to meet a state law requiring humanities classes to include the Western canon; 20 of these Quest courses help rebuild offerings following sweeping cuts last year. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The School Board of Alachua County will hold a business meeting on Tuesday, March 3 at 6:00 p.m. in the District Office Boardroom (620 E. University Ave).  Alachua Chronicle
  • Gainesville Regional Utilities will raise its electric fuel adjustment from 45 to 50 mills on March 1, boosting the average monthly bill for 1,000 kWh users to roughly $151.60. The utility attributes the third hike in three months—caused by winter natural gas shortages—to increased fuel costs.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Gainesville Regional Utilities will raise its electric fuel adjustment charge from 45 mills to 50 mills on March 1 to help cover rising fuel costs after a record-breaking winter. The utility will monitor prices for further adjustments.  WCJB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Peyton Harbert, a Florida gymnastics student manager who beat cancer and became free in 2022, works as a Florida Gator while training with the team. She plans to help kids as an oncology physician assistant and pursue a master’s in law studies before graduating in May.  WRUF
  • Local boxing coach Lee Gladden of Gladden Boxing Club will coach Team USA at the 2028 Olympics. He brings 52 years of boxing experience to his new role in the sport + his decades-long dedication stands to inspire emerging athletes.  WCJB
  • Rowdy Reptiles students have camped out outside the O’Connell Center for over 24 hours to secure tickets for today's Gators men's basketball game against Arkansas — their dedication is clear as ESPN College GameDay will film live.  WRUF
