  • Gainesville police held a celebration on Friday (thanking school crossing guards for keeping students safe) at a local event that recognized their important role near schools. The gathering honored the crossing guards as a key part of the community.  WCJB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oak Hall honors longtime staff member Buddy Bryant by offering a need-based scholarship for incoming ninth grade students that covers tuition and fees through high school (nearly $100k total) with applications due Feb. 28.  The Gainesville Sun
  • ACPS held a heated rezoning meeting at Hawthorne Middle/High School on Feb. 4, where local residents rejected surveys and voiced concerns over transportation and enrollment — the district plans a follow-up session at Buchholz High School on Feb. 9.  The Gainesville Sun

  • Data from Realtor.com shows that in November, Alachua County median home sale price climbed to $332,500, a 2.3% rise from October. Single-family homes saw higher prices while condo prices fell (to $167,000), reflecting varied market trends.  The Gainesville Sun

  • Cory Durden, a Newberry native who grew up working on his family's Archer farm, will start as the Patriots' defensive lineman in Super Bowl LX on Sunday at Levi's Stadium (Santa Clara) as his strong work ethic helped him overcome going undrafted until coach Mike Vrabel gave him a chance.  The Gainesville Sun
  • P.K. Yonge advanced to the Class 2A-District 2 Championship after beating Oak Hall 71-60 on Thursday night — they will host Trinity Catholic at 6 p.m. today in the title game.  WRUF
  • Florida women's basketball beat Auburn 61-53 last Thursday at the O'Dome — the Gators overcame a slow start with a strong third-quarter surge and defense to record their second SEC win with key plays by Me’Arah O’Neal and Laila Reynolds.  WRUF
  • Eastside rallied to beat Ocala Lake Weir 58-54 in a crucial semifinal on Thursday — their record now 15-8 — and will travel to face Citra North Marion in the district championship game on Saturday.  WRUF
  • Florida has risen to the top of the SEC men's basketball power rankings after a 23-point win on Feb. 6, and it will host Texas A&M on Feb. 7 in a key conference matchup (nine teams remain within two games of first place).  GatorSports
