CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Fe College revived Pink Floyd Fridays at its Kika Silva Pla planetarium last month, with shows featuring the albums (Dark Side of the Moon), (The Wall) and (Wish You Were Here).   • Kanapaha Middle School band director Michael Loffredo was named Amazing Teacher for January. The recognition highlights his dedication to music education in the local community.  The Gainesville Sun

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UF scientists at the Crop Transformation Center are researching tree genetics to help citrus growers battle the Asian citrus psyllid that causes citrus greening disease and a 92% drop in orange production. They hope the new seedling variety will provide a future remedy for lost crops.  WCJB
  • Florida residents should let faucets drip and insulate exposed pipes to prevent bursting as a freeze watch and unusually cold temperatures affect our area today. Experts advise covering pipes and sealing drafts when temperatures drop to the teens for lasting protection.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Landscapes Unlimited Nursery owner Mike Gianikas advises residents to protect house and patio plants as the coldest weekend approaches, recommending that sensitive specimens be moved indoors and young citrus be covered when temperatures drop into the low 20s, and suggests choosing native or Florida-friendly varieties for easier upkeep.  WCJB

HEALTH NEWS

  • UF College of Dentistry’s 11th annual Super Sealant Saturday will offer free dental exams, sealants, and fluoride varnish for children ages 1–17 on Feb. 7 at 1395 Center Drive, with walk-ins welcome. The event features a Toy Story theme and fun extras (face painting and a puppet show) to make dental care fun.  WCJB

  • The No. 5 Florida men's golf team finished first in their last two tournaments and now will play in the Sea Best Invitational at Atlantic Beach Country Club on Feb. 2. The unchanged starting lineup aims to win their first National Championship since 2023 and repeat as SEC Champions.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Oak Hall held a seniors ceremony at its gym Wednesday before its final home game, where the Eagles lost 57 to 53 to the Eastside Rams after a late free throw miss. The team now stands at 12 to 10 and will host a 2A District 2 Tournament opener Tuesday.  WRUF
  • Friday at Stephen O’Connell Center, Kayla DiCello posted season-best scores on vault, uneven bars, and beam as No. 3 Florida defeated No. 6 Arkansas 198.050-195.975 in gymnastics.   • Florida football has added five key offensive transfers to boost its championship level roster under coach Jon Sumrall.
