COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Coterie Market launched its January calendar with workshops such as junk journaling and vision board collages earlier this week at the cafe on University Avenue near campus. The event offers students a relaxed space to set new term goals.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Community members will gather Saturday, Jan. 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Depot Park Pavilions to honor animal advocate Hilary Hynes—founder of the Paws on Parole program and a recognized figure in animal welfare.  Alachua County Today
  • The Humane Society of North Central Florida is hosting a four-day adoption event from Jan. 14–17, with dog viewings from 1 to 3 p.m. and cat sessions at set times to help pets rescued from overcrowded shelters find homes.  Alachua County Today

CULTURE NEWS

  • The City of Gainesville received a $19,000 NEA grant to support Plays in the Park: The American Story, a series of six performances based on American Girl storybooks that highlight key periods in American history. EDUCATION NEWS

  • On January 15, P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School earned AP Platinum status from the College Board in Gainesville & was recognized for offering 28 AP courses that boost college readiness.  Alachua Chronicle
  • Alachua County Public Schools announced that five local high schools earned a spot on the 2025 AP Honor Roll, with Buchholz and Eastside earning Gold Status. The award recognizes their strong work in preparing students for college credit.  Alachua Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Palms Medical Group will host a Safe Riders Safe Drivers event on Saturday, Jan. 31 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its High Springs location (16916 NW US HWY 441) to offer free car seat safety checks and CarFit evaluations for proper driver adjustments.  Alachua Chronicle

  • Local visitors can explore La Chua Trail at Paynes Prairie Preserve, where a paved boardwalk and bike trail wind past old oaks and a prairie edge. SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida women's basketball remains winless in SEC play as early struggles make it hard to secure a win. The team will face Kentucky (16-2, 3-1 SEC) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Rupp Arena as it tries to clinch its first conference victory.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • The Buchholz boys soccer team won the City Cup over GHS 9-2 on Wednesday. Teague McNeal led with three goals as the team secured an eighth ranking in the state with a season showing 14-0-1, including 75 goals scored.  WCJB
  • Florida Gators gymnast Ly Bui began her college career early and became the youngest NCAA competitor last season. Now a sophomore who adjusted her skills after a summer growth spurt, she will lead her team at today's meet against No. 4 Alabama at the O’Connell Center.  GatorSports
