COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Former Melrose High students visited the school Tuesday morning — their final chance to see the classrooms before demolition begins due to asbestos concerns.  WCJB
  • The 1st Annual Gainesville Beer Mile will take place at Cypress & Grove Brewing Company on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 3:00 p.m. Participants will run a one-mile course with four beers or NA beers while supporting the Gainesville Area Rowing Club's youth sports programs.  Alachua Chronicle
  • High Springs plans MLK Weekend events with a Gospel Jubilee on Friday, Jan. 16 at 7:00 p.m. at Mount Carmel Church (24964 W. U.S. Hwy. 27) and a commemorative march on Monday, Jan. 19 beginning at City Hall and ending at Catherine L. Taylor Park and Douglas Community Center.  Alachua Chronicle

  • The Hippodrome hosted a crowded screening of the 2025 documentary 'The Librarians' Sunday (part of a Jan. 10–18 run) in collaboration with The Lynx bookstore to spotlight local free speech efforts amid ongoing book bans, drawing viewers from around the state.  The Independent Florida Alligator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On January 13, the Florida Department of Education reported Alachua County Public Schools achieved a 93.9% on-time graduation rate — up from 92.7% last year — while Florida reached a record 92.2% statewide for the 2024-25 school year.  Alachua Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents along County Road 235 have grown concerned about heavy truck traffic since December 2024 in a residential area between Newberry and Alachua. The county plans to resurface the roadway in 2027 (and is applying for safety grants) as officials review measures to reduce truck flow.  WCJB
  • Gov. Ron DeSantis yesterday appointed Gainesville businessman and former state lawmaker Keith Perry to the State University System Board of Governors — his appointment, along with two new appointees and two reappointments, is pending Senate confirmation.  The Gainesville Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • Between Jan. 5 and 11, 2026, inspectors reviewed Gainesville restaurants and found high-priority violations related to food temperature control and hygiene at several establishments including Biscuits and Burgers and McDonald’s. The Department of Business & Professional Regulation reports that corrective actions were taken during follow-up inspections.  The Gainesville Sun

SPORTS NEWS

  • Gators Softball has been ranked No. 10 in Softball America’s preseason poll after a successful offseason, keeping 10 returning players and a top recruiting class that features redshirt recruit Caroline Stanton. The team will face seven ranked opponents in the upcoming season.  WRUF
  • Former Newberry defensive lineman Jarquez Carter transferred from Ohio State to Miami after entering the transfer portal Friday + he joined high school teammate Mykah Newton on Miami's defensive line. The move gives one of Gainesville area's top prospects a fresh start.  The Gainesville Sun
  • No. 19 Florida won its first road game with a 96-79 victory over Oklahoma in Norman Tuesday night. With Thomas Haugh scoring 21 points, the Gators will face Vanderbilt Saturday at 2 p.m.  The Independent Florida Alligator
