EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UF's spring semester starts Monday, Jan. 12 with classes ending April 22; spring break runs from March 16 to 20 and final exams are set for April 25 to May 1. Commencement for nearly 10,000 graduates is planned for May 1 to 3 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The Gainesville Sun
- ➤ Alachua County Public Schools released their spring 2026 calendar and classes begin today, Jan. 6, with holidays on Jan. 16, Jan. 19, Feb. 16, and March 30; spring break runs March 16-20 and school ends on June 2. The Gainesville Sun
- ➤ Matheson History Museum will host an eight-session memoir workshop with Liz Coursen (Jan. 13 to Apr. 28) on the second and fourth Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon; registration costs $135 for members and $180 for the public with only 20 spots available. Alachua Chronicle
- ➤ Mrs. Davis, a first-grade teacher at High Springs Community School (with nearly 30 years of service), was awarded $500 for her work in reading and writing. Her teaching has helped generations of students in a close community. WCJB

- ➤ A new H3N2 flu strain called subclade K is circulating widely after the busy holiday season as Florida sees high flu activity. Health officials urge residents to get vaccinated and practice good hygiene + avoid close contact to help reduce the risk of infection. The Gainesville Sun
- ➤ Longtime WCJB meteorologist Bill Quinlan (retired in 2024 after nearly 30 years on air) died suddenly over the weekend from a heart attack. The Boston native was respected for blending science and art in weather reporting for North Central Florida. Mainstreet Daily News
