  • The historic Alachua County Farmers Market has moved to San Felasco Tech City (13900 Tech City Circle), keeping its Saturday hours of 8:30 a.m. to noon while serving local growers and shoppers. Free tastings and organic gardening workshops will begin in January and continue into February.  Alachua County Today
  • Local Gainesville Venezuelans reacted with hope and worry after news that President Maduro was captured by U.S. forces early Saturday.   • The Alachua County Arts Council is preparing its 5th annual Artists Conference on Friday, Apr. 24 and is seeking presenters + sponsors to shape the event; application materials must be submitted by Friday, Jan. 16 via its website.  Alachua County Today
  • Season 30 of Worst Cooks in America: Reality Check will air Sunday, Jan. 4 at 8 p.m. on the Food Network and features Florida natives Amara La Negra and Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte (a former UF athlete) competing for a $25,000 charity prize.  The Gainesville Sun

  • Florida Lotto’s jackpot reached $12 million on Saturday, Jan. 3 after rollover drawings on Dec. 31 and New Year’s Eve, with tickets sold at local outlets + the next drawing is set for Wed, Jan. 7 at 11:15 p.m. ET.  The Gainesville Sun

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Alachua County leaders have opened composting centers that let residents recycle trash into compost — the centers are now available countywide.  WCJB

FINANCE NEWS

  • Residents in Gainesville are urged to check Florida's unclaimed property database after nearly $585,000 was returned to area residents last November (official figures show over $55 million returned statewide). The free search can show dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, and other forgotten assets.  Alachua County Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • No. 22 Florida will travel to Columbia Saturday to face Missouri as the Gators begin an 18-game conference schedule. Missouri beat the Gators last season and Florida will focus on defense and ball control to secure a win.  The Independent Florida Alligator
  • Florida basketball played Missouri on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 8:30 p.m. on the SEC Network, with fans able to stream the contest via the ESPN app or Fubo & the game marked Florida’s SEC season opener after a recent win over Dartmouth.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Florida basketball coach Todd Golden said his program did not recruit former pro players and stressed the need for clear eligibility rules after retroactive signings past the declaration deadline. He warned that if such trends persist, adjustments may follow+ putting recruiting practices under scrutiny.  The Gainesville Sun
  • Florida hosted its first outdoor NHL game in Miami at LoanDepot Park, where the Panthers lost 5-1 to the Rangers during the Discover NHL Winter Classic. Gainesville residents noted the event's themed areas and strong fan turnout signal a growing interest in hockey in the state.  WRUF
